Abstract
Background: Sub epithelial connective tissue graft (SCTGs) are considered as the gold standard in the treatment of gingival recessions and have long-term stability for Complete root coverage (CRC) in Miller’s Class I and Class II gingival recession but there is a need for a second surgical area, limited amount of graft, low patient tolerance and high complication rates in donor area. To overcome these limitations acellular dermal matrix, xenogeneic collagen matrix, enamel dermal matrix etc. have been introduced as an alternative to SCTGs to treat gingival recession Methods: 14 RCTs were included in this systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines. The risk bias assessment was conducted by using ROBINS-I. Results: The results of this systematic review found that out of 14 studies 4 studies favored SCTG over non SCTG for root coverage in Miller’s class I and class II Gingival recession which was statically significant. Rest all of the studies concluded that both SCTG and non SCTG grafts can effectively reduce the gingival recession depth and help in root coverage in gingival recession but the results are statistically non-significant. Conclusion: Both SCTG and non SCTG grafts can be used for the treatment of gingival recession to achieve root coverage and gain in the width of keratinized tissue. ADMs may be an alternative treatment in cases where multiple area of recession is seen where SCTGs harvested from the palate area would in sufficient.
