Evaluation of surface changes of dental implants after irradiation of Diode laser with different energies: A SEM Study


Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the implant surfaces changes following radiation with diode laser at various energy levels. Methods: 20 implants (Dentis, Korea) were irradiated with diode laser, and two implants were considered as control group. The experiments were irratiated at energies of 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5, 5.5 watts for 5 and 10 seconds. Then surface implant changes were evaluated using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results: At irradiation with energies of 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 watts, there were no significant morphologic changes and any melting in SEM analysis on implants and the surfaces were similar to the control group surface. But the irradiation with 4.5, 5.5 watts for 5 and 10 seconds resulted in the surface changes. Especially at the irradiation with diode laser 5.5 watts for 10 seconds, the extensive melting was visible. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that a diode laser up to 3.5 watts does not damage implant surfaces and can be useful for use in the treatment of peri-implantitis.
